Quick Wins - Things You Can Do (Right Now) to Improve Workplace Safety.

"Your employees learn by example. If they don't see you practicing good safety habits, they won't think safety is important." – Electrical Construction & Maintenance

You may think that implementing health and safety processes in the workplace will take a lot of time and effort. Workplace safety really doesn’t have to be a huge task. There are some simple steps that you can take right now to kick-start your health and safety culture in your business – and can make a huge difference:

1. Host a team meeting on safety.

Schedule in a team meeting to discuss safety in the workplace. You will be surprised how switched on your employees will be when it comes to safety concerns. It is likely that things will be raised in the meeting that you may not have noticed before and often they are points that are quick and easy to resolve.

Encourage your team to report safety issues as and when they come across them. This simple philosophy helps health and safety to become a collaborative project in your office. It is a key step towards making sure that your processes stay relevant and appropriate in your workplace too.

2. Create labels and signs.

This is a quick way in which you can instantly make the workplace safer. Not to mention its implementation is cheap and very effective. Alongside mandatory signs, consider any extra signs you think would be useful. Perhaps hazard symbols, or instructions on how to use a product or piece of equipment.

Signs are also a great way of communicating with staff on relevant topics, such as when certain safety equipment and clothing should be worn.

3. Ensure your workforce has the right tools.

Making sure you have the right tools for your team to use is crucial to keeping them safe in their daily working life. Book in regular safety checks (either internally or via a third party provider) for tools and equipment too.

4. Keep the workplace clean.

Did you know that many workplace accidents can be attributed to mess? By keeping areas clean, ensuring spills are mopped up quickly, correcting tangled cords etc you can make huge strides in your new safety culture. Encouraging your team to clean as they go can drastically reduce the likelihood of accidents in the workplace.

5. Break times are essential.

As we all know, exhaustion can be extremely dangerous. That is why it is important to enforce regular break times for your employees. Also, it is important to lead by example by going on breaks yourself so that you reinforce their importance.

As you can see, you don’t have worry unnecessarily about the process of implementing health and safety. There are a few ways in which you can help improve the health and safety in your workplace now. Make sure you lead by example when it comes to safety issues and you will soon start to see a great safety culture being built in your business. As always, employees do learn from role models. Keep communications open with your team, so they can come to you if they see any red flags.
